my XFree 3.3.x server used to use up between 60 and 100MB with most of
that swapped out. netscape especially seemed to cause memory leaks. it
was vaguely annoying because it meant i had to log out, kill X, and log
back in again once every month or two just to reclaim the memory (or
occasionally netscape would do something stupid that took X down and i
got logged out whether i liked it or not).

since upgrading to X 4.0.1 in woody, it seems to stay stable at around
30MB total (about half resident, half swapped out).

netscape and mozilla are still bloated memory leaking pigs, but X has
been tamed.

system is a dual p3-450 with 256MB and an i740 video card. i get similar
memory usage patterns with a variety of other boxes.
