Since when has use of invective been a requirement for
flammage? Resorting to foul language, or other ad hominem attacks,
reveals a number of things about the author:
a) Lack of creativity. English is a fairly expressive (though often
imprecise) language; and having to express ones opinions in
language of the gutter shows a limited imagination.
b) Lack of a convincing argument: if one truly had a compelling
argument to back up ones opinions, one should not have to stoop to
resorting to such rude and unsavory tactics
c) Insecurity. Only a very insecure person has to get the rush of
validation by the feeling of having ``chastised'' the
target. Unfortunately, software seems to be a young mans following
for the most part (statistically speaking, here in the states, at
least), and young men are often insecure, and feel the need to
assert themselves through whatever means necessary. (Our heritage
as a primate tribe/alpha male back grounds may play a role here).
d) Leading from the above; a mistaken belief that having
``trounced'' your opponent gains one approbation in the eyes of
one's peers.
e) Arguably, a lack of intellectual ability (hurling pathetic, and
Neanderthal, insults at each other rather than calm, rational
dialogue is surely not an intelligent choice). I am on thin ice
here; perhaps the above factors do some times over ride a possible
glimmer of intelligence.
f) perhaps a delibrately, even a malicious, disruptive element,
trying to sabotage the project, wittingly or not. This again is
controversial, and perhaps a low probability event in any case.
Can we perhaps let this thread die; perhaps by ignoring the
worst offenders? May I suggest mailagent as a palliative to jangled
nerves?
