One possiblity, depending on how much work you're willing to do, would be
to write some Makefile fragments that are wrappers around -lpwlib in the
appropriate manner so that you can just set PWLIBDIR and use upstream
sources directly. It'd probably be worth talking to upstream though;
they might be happy to just go with the -lpwlib thing, if it can be made
to work.
