Are you sure you have the same amount of un-displayed screen memory?
Having off-screen memory available for the server to use is important
in performance of this kind.  For example, my Vaio has a Neomagic
256AV with 2.5MB.  If I have 32bpp, then I get very jerky behavior
because it exactly uses all the screen memory for display.  If I set
to 16bpp, then I get nice crisp behavior.

When I upgraded to X4, suddenly the display got jerky and icky, but it
was because under X3 I had been at 16bpp, and dexter went and set it
to 32bpp for X4.  So I set it back down, and the crisp behavior came
back.

I suspect something like this may be going on in your case; if not
this particular option, then another.
