No, it's not.  Configuring a remote box is perfectly legal.  Imagine
the situations:

1) it's DHCPed and you want a static IP instead.
2) it's got multiple interface cards
3) the gateway is wrong and you are the same local network
4) You want to alias the network card to a new IP

etc etc etc.

yes, you _can_ badly screw up by changing the IP you are
using to communicate with it. :)  But that's half the fun. :)
