Unfortunately, in my experience, 2.2.17-pre9 and -pre10 are more
stable than any other 2.2.x kernels.

The 2.2.17 is mostly a bugfix release. The thing is that even Alan Cox
now says in public that the VM in 2.2.x is broken, has been broken
since 2.2.0, and 2.2.0 should never have been released like this.

The same goes for other things like some drivers. eepro100 comes
to mind :(. This is slowly getting fixed in 2.2.17preX. Scary
thing is that for example 2.2.15 was a complete disaster and
2.2.16 wasn't that good either.

Why do you think that a 2.2.17preX kernel is being used in potato
right now...

And just to cheer you up, for the 2.4 kernels: same story. VM is
unbelievably broken and the estimate is that it will take months
to fix, hopefully Linus will not decide to release 2.4.0 before that.

Now, for a simple desktop machine, you probably won't notice
the difference, so it isn't as bad as it sounds. But for a
heavily loaded server, this stuff is important.

Mike.
