then why don't we have big, well known companies that make non-proprietary
software?

i'm not saying that these couldn't exist, but unless you have the right
people pulling the strings, it is a bit hard to do this.

try and make a small company, just because you have to make your living,
i bet you can't do it with non-propietary software, you have to sell it
first, when your company has grown to teen-age or later you can do like
the makers of mysql did.

i would like to see where the money is coming from. do they make living by
making Open Source software, or by making investments to other companies
which make the money for them?
