This is fixed in an NMU upload I just did (8.1.1-10.1).
The problem was that a compiled-in directory was checked for the
"allowed" safe location of mailboxes, and outsie that, the setgid
privelidges were dropped. Hence the lockfile couldn't be created.
I fixed it so both /var/mail and /var/spool/mail are accepted.

Please cc me in any replies as I don't get to read debian-devel
regularly at the moment.
