Okay,

I've got test debs up at
deb http://yakk.ucc.asn.au/debian yakk main

The sawmill and sawmill-gnome packages have disappeared. The new sawfish
package "Replaces: sawmill", "Conflicts: sawmill" and that seems to have
made the upgrade okay. When I had a dummy sawmill package that "Depends:
sawfish" apt refused to upgrade the packages.

There are no symlinks. Is that okay? Symlinks will only delay the inevitable.
