So, slink version of telnet has 8-bit support, but not through -8 option?
And that 8-bit support is a broken hack, while the support through option
-8 is valid?

Funny, I was able to telnet to SunOS (5.6) from a slink machine just fine...
8-bit characters displayed just fine.
