At the time there wasn't strong odbc support for Linux. This was around the summer of 1998, back when GNOME was mystic to build, and there were no Debian packages (Jim Pick was the maintainer at the time, not to insult him :) ). I believe the plan was to use ODBC at some level, but I do not know if that panned out.
