I think it depends on the level of support you want to give to potato
users, and the number of users affected by this bug.

This problem has a technical solution (see base-files), not too difficult
to implement. However, if it's true that the /usr/local directory inside
gs.deb bug was discovered quickly and fixed quickly, not too many people
will have their /usr/local-symlink directory removed because of upgrading
to the fixed version, so I, for one, would not mind very much that you do
nothing about it, as long as upgrades from slink work without problems.
