Yep, just as I thought -- it works that way because it always has. I
certainly don't object to allowing it to work outside of /dev, but the
default really ought to be /dev, not the working dir. (The trouble is
that I only have occasion to run MAKEDEV once every two years, so it
bites me every time. My fault? Of course. But I bet it bites a bunch of
other people too.)
