Modifying the string table size in pdflatex

I am trying to create the pdf documentation for the 0.99.0 release of
the r-base package.  I encounter an error of

 ! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [pool size=68569].
 <argument> \string \indexentry 
				{sys.status@sys.status\textit {(sys.parent)}|...
 l.23156 \alias{sys.status}{sys.parent}

 !  ==> Fatal error occurred, the output PDF file not finished!
 Transcript written on refman.log.

Is there an easy fix for this?  I would need to document it so that
others can build the package on different architectures.
