yes, i'm sorry, this was a misunderstanding on my part. i thought that there was an older style for configurations that involved having the postinst and postrm scripts keep track of configuration information on their own. if that is not the case then yes, dpkg should know which package(s) "own" a directory, or maybe it should just do the rmdir step again after purge, as well as after remove. --p.
