Bug #33929 is a critical bug which is probably easily fixable, but
which should prevent the release of slink unless it is fixed.
Essentially, hamm users with pcmcia who upgrade will find that pcmcia
no longer works. This probably destroys the network or modem
connection and prevents further upgrades. This is very bad.
The bug exists in the 2.0.34 kernel, which is the kernel most hamm
users have. There are two possible solutions which I can see:
1. Remove 2.0.34 from slink. This solutions fails if 2.0.34 is
needed for certain hardware.
2. Recompile pcmcia-modules-2.0.34. This will probably fix the
problem. I can't test this, since I don't have a machine with pcmcia
which works with the standard kernel.
This bug and other, including super's security problem suggest
postponing the 2.1 release. Debian has always cared more about
correctness than timeliness. Part of the reason for this attitude is
because Brian has been hardnosed when he needs to be. I would like a
2.1 Debian for LinuxWorld, but I want a good and tested release. I
don't think that we have that yet.
Another alternative is that we could release a 2.1 beta on the
approximate release date. pcmcia-modules-2.0.34 still needs to be
fixed, but this can be done quickly by someone with the proper
hardware.
