The officially best way of Debianizing a package... there isn't any.
My recommendation is to learn everything there is to learn (packaging by
hand, without any helpers, helps here) and then choose the method you use
(debhelper, debstd, dbs or hand-roll) based on fact and not on guess.

You should certainly aspire to understand the process.  The automata
can make mistakes, and they occasionally do.
