        I trie4d this out. Thanks. I have a few problems with the files:
 /usr/share/emacs/20.4/lisp/emacs-lisp/cl.elc
 /usr/share/emacs/20.4/lisp/emacs-lisp/cl-macs.elc

        Moving them out of the way, and using the .el versions
 works. (recompiling did not help) The following lisp file had to be
 recompiled:

 /usr/share/emacs/20.4/lisp/mail/rfc822.el

        I also had to recompile a select few (dmacro related) personal
 elisp files (the .elc files had complaints about invalid
 characters). I have not investigated deeply, since things seem to
 work well.

        Rob, could you please see that most elc files are remade?
