I have a slink / potato mix, and I needed to install both mozilla
and mozilla-mailnews to get it to run. Without it, it gets as far
as the Profile Manager, but nothing ever happens after that step
ends (whatever all that means!). I don't have any sort of proxying
or other strangeness except that the system is a base slink with
lots of upgrades from potato.

Hope this helps -- and thanks for the M9!
