Well, I've got one working with 2.0.x and I use it on a daily basis.  I also
use one on 2.2.x, and it's just spiffier, but essentially the same thing. 
I've got LILO on the /dev/ttyS0, I can choose a kernel from there, and 2.2.x
can actually output initial boot messages to the serial device.  Login via
the serial port is handled using inittab, and the kernel has nothing to do
with it.
