On the other hand it DOES work for all possible netmasks, at least for
routing and ipconfig. Linux does not support other netmasks.(*)

(*) there are possible situations where one likes netmasks like:
0.0.0.255:0.0.0.255 to mask out all packets to possible class-c Broadcast
addresses.
