As I noted in my earlier message, even though that bypasses the non-free
issue, most people will probably not pick up the subtle point. We have
a hard-earned and deserved reputation as sticklers about free software.
I don't want people thinking "Well, GIFs must be ok, 'cause Debian uses
them."
I took Raul's big image (raul-0.gif) and created two JPG copies (one
bigger than the gif, using Gimp's defaults, the other about the same
size, by decreasing the quality) and a PNG copy. Even the small
JPG isn't hideous (although clearly not as sharp, expecially the
red), and I suspect that somebody who actually knew something about
image processing could produce a better version. Check them out at
http://www.debian.org/~stevegr/logos.html. (Raul, I hope this is okay to
show.)
(I was honestly surprised to learn that the graphics on www.debian.org
were GIFs; it never occured to me that we would use them.)
Steve
