This is true. However, I have investigated the situation, and have
discovered that only about 20% of the catalogues are actually relevant
to the gettext program itself. So the 220k of catalogues could be
reduced to about 40-50k for a base version. Would take a little
effort to automate (could of scripts), but I think the effort would be
worth it. I may discuss this with the upstream authors.
