Where did you get that idea? It is not true.

However on my potato boxen, there is no gnu/types.h.  Why is this?

Because it was an internal header in glibc 2.0, and internal headers moved to bits/ in glibc 2.1. sys/types.h is the standard header, and is what should be used in portable programs.
