well "runsocks" has stopped working with a SIGSEGV from any app it runs.
going through the runsocks script by hand and then ltracing "fetchmail"
indicates that gethostbyname? is the problem.

stracing "runsocks fetchmail" gets  a SIGSEGV after a few reads of
/etc/nsswitch.conf (like about two lines of it).  Hmmm - the changelog for
libc6 says something about "include old nss libraries" - I'll try again...
