As I understand it there's nothing specifically preventing a person or
company from obtaining an Australian patent on software, most just don't
bother. The web site is http://www.ipaustralia.gov.au/ and has a search
engine that doesn't work very well (java..).
Having met a few Australian patent office employees I can understand why
no one wants to deal with them. They're some of the most unpleasant people
in government. Those I've met failed to find employment in their chosen
fields, so if they can't get rich they'll be damned if they'll let anyone
else. I don't think they get bonuses for successful applications, unlike
they're U.S. counterparts, and a monopoly in the Australian market isn't
worth paying significant bribes for. :)
