It is annoying. But if you can't stand having things break arbitrarily,
don't upgrade to potato. It's known as unstable for a reason. If you
remove gnome libraries from the distribution, your working X app won't
work then either because it will be missing the appropriate libraries. 

How about a little patience? End users - who should be running hamm
right now - don't have problems. Developers and other cutting edge
people can get the cutting edge programs at the cost of stability. If
you wait for a little while, the gnome stuff will become 1.0 and should
all work right.
