How to move a conffile to a new location?

Hi!

I just thought it might be a good idea to ask here for some help with
this:

I have a package that has a conffile that is under /etc/. Now, I am
releasing a new version of this package but I want to move the
conffile to a new location: /etc/package/.

My question is: how should I handle this situation? Obviously, I want
that the install scripts handle the situation in a way that the
/etc/conffile gets moved to /etc/package/conffile.

Anyone one has faced this situation before?
