It's very useful to be able to go back and look at a log of a dpkg run, dpkg-mountable has that functionality and it's one thing I wish apt (or better, dpkg did). It's useful to file bug reports, to see where something went wrong, to see what you did last week, etc. I don't particularly like Ben's version of logging though. -- see shy jo
