I wouldn't be so sure about this one. Have a look at the various egcs
mailing list archives at egcs.cygnus.com. More recent snapshots didn't
performed better than gcc-2.7. There are some more optimizations
undergoing, but these won't be in the egcs-1.1 release (see
http://egcs.cygnus.com/ml/egcs-patches/1998-Jul/0420.html).
