I think that the developers would probably elect whoever you nominated.

It isn't a matter of trust, it's a matter of involvement.  We would trust
you to run Debian single-handed, but if you don't give the developers a
feeling of involvement by encouraging them to participate in decisions such
as the choice of technical committee members you may soon find yourself
doing so.  The developers won't quit: they'll just leave all the decisions
to you.
