It doesn't. It can't!
There is no way, in standard FTP, of 'asking for the symlink'. The only
command is RETR, and RETR gives you the file, not the link.
There may be some extension to the FTP protocol enabling you to get the
links, but in the basic standard, its not possible.
If these badly broken FTP programs are getting 0-length files, it can only
be their own fault.
I suggest we stick a working DOS FTP client in tools.
