I was told that it would cover all the revisions, but it makes more sense
the other way. Is there a simply way to test this. I have limited access
to the range of version numbers, but I guess I could do a test build that
conflicts with my installed version without the - version and see how it
goes.

Given that you are correct and I must specify every -x version, how many
of these are there?

Absolutely! These are replacing the dpkg conflicts.
