Oh, and I spoke with the alsa maintainers, and they claim that you
can't use the

  cat /proc/asound/0/mixer0 > foo
  cat foo > /proc/asound/0/mixer0

trick in the init.d script anymore to save and restore the sound
settings.  Apparently under newer ALSA's you're supposed to use
alsactl instead.
