The GPL contains a special clause so that you get to modify it for use on
a proprietary system which someone else provided, as long as all users
of that system would have access to that proprietary stuff.  You can
even distribute object code with proprietary pieces embedded in it, as
long they're these essential sorts of pieces and anyone can have a copy.

So you have to be careful, but not outrageously so.
