I was. I was even working for Debian when we switched from libc4 to libc5.

That's correct. I have also experienced having bash and a not compatible
libreadline on my machine. But I still was able to get into it start ftp,
download the correct packages and install them. This is not what I call
destroying a system. Did you ever manage to destroy your C library? That's
what I call destroying your system.
