apt hanging ...

This is my /etc/apt/sources.list
deb ftp://ftp.caldera.com/pub/mirrors/debian stable main contrib non-free

now I type 'apt-get update'
Something flashes by fast, and then it stops with this
Get ftp://ftp.caldera.com stable/contrib Packages
0%  [Packages `' 0]  

If I remove the word 'contrib' from the conf file.  everything is okay
again.

This has persisted for a few days.
