FYI: I just purged man-db and dwww, thus deleting /var/catman,
then reinstalled man-db.  The problem was still there.

What other files could possibly be holding on to strange behaviour?

As listed at the top, it was reported against sysutils, jdk1.1-dev and
jdk1.1-runtime.  Based on the list in the report.
