And you still loose :)

SLP is a tar format with an added binary header that tar happens to ignore.

There is no way that you could extract the ontrol information from a SLP
package without the special SLP tools. sYOu are loosing information when
using this on a different plattform, say SCO Unix.

Debians format can be extracted with ar and tar solely. Debian is using a
tar package.
