This is a long standing upstream bug, which I'm surprised we have been
bitten by before (I know the Red Hat folks have had problems with it).
I'm not sure it's going to be fixed anytime soon either. [Though, I'd
love to be proved wrong on that score]
One possibility would be to manually strip it with an old strip from
an older binutils (e.g. compile the strip from the m68k
cross-compiling binutils source). This is an ugly hack, but this bug
doesn't affect m68k (we've upgraded to a previous version of binutils
for other reasons), the only other hamm-release architecture[1].
