I guess I'm forced to agree:

# cd /usr/lib
# ls *gdbm*
libgdbm.a libgdbm.so.1 libgdbm.so.1.7.3
libgdbm.so libgdbm.so.1.7 libgdbm.so.2
# mkdir tmp
# mv *gdbm* tmp/
# perl -e 'print "hi\n"'
perl: error in loading shared libraries
libgdbm.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
# mv tmp/* .
# perl -e 'print "hi\n"'
# strace -o /tmp/perltrace perl -e 'print "hi\n"'
# grep gdbm /tmp/perltrace
open("/usr/lib/libgdbm.so.1", O_RDONLY) = 5

I don't know how I missed this before.
