gcc-2.8.1 isn't an upgrade from 2.7.2.3?????? Sorry, I wasn't precise
enough.

I know about this egcs problem. This is exactly why I don't switch to egcs.
But I do use gcc-2.8.1 (the experimental version) for quite some time now
and have yet to experience this kind of problem.

Agreed. egcs looks like a better tool. But as long as you can't compile the
kernel with it ...
