Because it isn't an upgrade.
Why we don't replace gcc 2.7.2.x packages with 2.8.1 ones: like egcs, gcc
2.8.1 cannot be used to compile working 2.0.x kernels.
Why we don't replace egcs with gcc 2.8.1: because it is a downgrade:
- 2.8.1 lacks several features (especially wrt C++) that are in egcs.
- 2.8.1 doesn't come with integrated C++ libraries, Fortran77 support,
improved instruction scheduler.
I see no significant reason to having 2.8.1 . Don't get me wrong, if someone
packages it up (in a way consistent with the current gcc/egcs packages),
great; the more packages the merrier. However, I see no reason to work on
it.
