Netscape4 installer package broken?

Hi,

When I saw that Navigator 4.05 is out, I tried to install it with the
netscape4 installer package. First, I removed the old netscape package I
had and then removed the entire /usr/lib/netscape directory. Now it had
all gone. Then I got the .tar.gz from my local Netscape mirror and did
this:

# dpkg -i netscape4_4.0-7.deb
(Reading database ... 28706 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking netscape4 (from netscape4_4.0-7.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing netscape4_4.0-7.deb (--install):
unable to create `usr/X11R6/bin/netscape': No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
 netscape4_4.0-7.deb
# ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape
ls: /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape: No such file or directory
# dpkg --unpack netscape4_4.0-7.deb
(Reading database ... 28706 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking netscape4 (from netscape4_4.0-7.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing netscape4_4.0-7.deb (--unpack):
unable to create `usr/X11R6/bin/netscape': No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
 netscape4_4.0-7.deb
# mkdir netscape4
# dpkg-deb -x netscape4_4.0-7.deb netscape4/
# cp -p netscape4/usr/X11R6/bin/netscape /usr/X11R6/bin/
#

What is going wrong here? dpkg has no trouble unpacking other packages
that were upgraded the past few days, only the netscape4 package seems to
be broken.

Relevant data about my system: closely following hamm (from day to day),
running a home-made 2.0.33 kernel. /usr is a symlink to something inside a
mounted ext2 filesystem. All this has been that way for months now.
