Need help on setting up tricky deps

I'm currently packaging my console-tools replacement to kbd, and ran
into the following problem:

svgatextmode depends on "kbd (>= 0.92-3)", and dpkg doesn't regognize
kbd-compat to provide this one.  Probably it comes from the problem
that we don't have versionned Provides:.

The solution I see here is to have svgatextmode depend on kbd, and
conflict with "kbd (<< 0.92-3)".  Are there any arguments against that
(apart from the fact that it will require kbd to be upgraded before
svgatextmode), or has anyone another solution ?
