It is not acceptable: it generates an errormessage on stderr if tempfile
is not installed.

I suppose this would work:

TIMEZONES=$(tempfile 2>/dev/null) || TIMEZONES=/etc/timezone.$$
                     ^^^^^^^^^^^
(I tested this)
