There is no reason why Scheme should incur much overhead compared to C
either.  And with the optimizations, it doesn't.  The fact that its
"properly tail recursive" has a lot to do with that, as it discusses in
SICP.

Average Scheme code is 2x slower.... Well written Scheme code is on par
with well written C++ code. (but much clearer and easier to understand,
and WAY easier syntax).
