dpkg-dev & $LANG

Hi,

 building packages fails with my local (german) settings for LANG
 and LC_ALL.
 Is there any permanent workaround other than unset'ting these
 environment variables? I nearly always forget this unset'ting :(

 BTW, is this a perl or dpkg-dev problem? And will it be solved in
 one of the next (dpkg-dev?) releases?
