I've had almost identical trouble with Netscape (4.04). It was caused by a
xlib6 package from hamm (3.3.1-2 --- pre-frozen version) which was installed.
It's removed from frozen now. I had to get xlib6 from bo, unpack it (not
install!) and move all libraries to /usr/lib/libc5-compat. Since then it works
:-). xmaple also had troubles with xlib6, but the result was much more
modest: just a "segmentation fault". Now it works also. I didn't report this
behaviour as a bug, since xlib6 is not in the distribution now.

Hope this'll help!
