Hello!
Please, just get rid of this package! It is too old! e2compr has went
through many revisions since then, and would now probably cooperate quite
nicely with the original ext2 stuff. I think e2compr is up to like version
0.4.4 now. Get rid of the old copy and package up the
new one! Otherwise, we could always wait until Debian 2.1. :-)

The problem was that I'd unwittingly increased the critical region but
hadn't moved the lock code back accordingly.
